Smith and Morsell help MSJ down Goretti

No. 2 Gaels avenge earlier loss, regains top spot in BCL

morsellSecond-ranked Mount St. Joseph hosted St. Maria Goretti in Irvington, Friday night, and the host Gaels avenged last month’s loss in Hagerstown with an impressive 72-60 win, propelling St. Joe back into first place in the Baltimore Catholic League.

Junior Jalen Smith and senior Darryl Morsell both dominated in the contest, combining for 43 points and 22 rebounds. Both players finished with double-doubles.

St. Joe (26-2 overall) also did an excellent defensive job on Goretti’s Elijah Clarance, limiting the Illinois State University commit to just eight points. In the last meeting, Clarance scored 29 points and hit a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer, lifting his team to a 63-62 win.

St. Joe led 35-34 at the half, but took command with an 11-0 spurt in the third quarter.

MSJ also got 13 points and six rebounds from senior Jaden Robinson. Goretti was paced by 18 points from RJ Blakney and 17 from Jake Kuhn. Amir Harris also added 10 points.

St. Joe is now 11-2 in the BCL. Goretti (21-5 overall) fell into second place in the conference with a 9-2 record.
