No. 7 John Carroll storms back from a 20-point deficit to top Pallotti in OT
Down 20 points on the road at St. Vincent Pallotti, Monday evening, seventh-ranked John Carroll School appeared to be squandering an opportunity to clinch second-place in the Black Division of the MIAA A Conference and a home game for the first round of the playoffs.

Before the final horn sounded, however, it was the host Panthers who did the squandering as they lost their lead and eventually lost to the Patriots, 79-76, in overtime.

As usual it was juniors Montez Mathis and Immanuel Quickley leading the way for John Carroll (20-10 overall, 10-5 MIAA A) as the pair combined for 57 points in the victory.

Mathis scored a game-high 32 points and Quickley netted 25 points and had nine assists. For good measure sophomore Nigel Haughton added 16 points for the Patriots.

The victory did indeed clinch the second-seed out of the Black Division for John Carroll and the Patriots may very well see Pallotti again in the opening round of the A Conference playoffs. The Panthers (12-14 overall) are currently 7-7 in the Red Division, slightly ahead of fourth-place Calvert Hall College (7-8). Both teams have clinched playoff spots, the difference being that the fourth-place finisher will have to travel to No. 3 Mount St. Joseph (15-0 in league play) for the opening round of the playoffs, while the third-place team will travel to Bel Air.

Pallotti will visit Calvert Hall on Wednesday. The winner will place third and the loser will place fourth. Pallotti also host 10th-ranked Boys’ Latin School on Friday, but that contest will not effect the Panthers’ seeding. It may, however, be very important to Boys’ Latin which is still trying to overtake No. 12 Glenelg Country School for third-place in the Black Division.
