Mustangs top Southern boys; No. 8 Old Mill tops Severna Park in girls' final dress rehearsal
It's been a season of adjustment for Meade High boys' basketball, but the Mustangs find themselves in a familiar spot. Meade defeated Southen, 78-61, in an Anne Arundel County match Tuesday in Fort Meade.
Mahzi Thames scored 25 points for the Mustangs (16-5 overall, 12-3 Anne Arundel), and senior guard Jeremy Washington added 22 points. Jairus Carroll finished with a game-high 28 points for Southern (15-5, 10-5 Anne Arundel).
The Mustangs built a 20-point advantage after three quarters, clinching a berth in the league title game Tuesday against No. 9 Old Mill at Meade. The Mustangs won the league championship last season en route to the Class 4A state final four.
Syvon Sturdivant, one of a couple of holdovers from last season, had 13 points for Meade, which hosts Old Mill in the regular season finale Friday evening. No. 8 Old Mill girls claimed its third straight regular season title with a 44-35 victory over 12th-ranked Severna Park in Millersville, in a title game preview.
Sophomore post Sydney Faulcon scored 18 points for the Patriots (18-2 overall, 15-0 Anne Arundel), and Mount St. Mary's recruit Rebecca Lee finished with 11. Katie DeFeo led Severna Park (18-3, 13-2 Anne Arundel) with 11 points.
Old Mill outscored the Falcons, 19-8, in the final quarter to extend its league winning streak to 55 games (including postseason). The Patriots will play Severna Park for the county title Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Arundel.
