Cavaliers still have the talent to make a run at 4-peat; Team Preview
As they have won three consecutive MIAA A Conference baseball championships, the Archbishop Spalding Cavaliers have faced doubts in each season. In 2017, with seven starters gone, including ace pitcher Tyler Blohm, the critics say this the end of the line in Spalding’s brewing dynasty, but talent level says anything but.

Senior Nick Vermillion, a power-hitting third-baseman and excellent athlete, has assumed the role as the team’s lead pitcher and is already 2-0 in 2017. He stands 6-feet and weighs 245 pounds, creating an intimidating presence on the hill. He also batted .364 last spring with 25 RBI, 15 runs and seven doubles.

Senior pitcher Jordan Gerber, who had a 0.00 ERA last year, with one save, will expand his role on the pitching staff. He has already committed to Mount St. Mary’s. Also adding to the pitching depth is senior Cam Webb, who was 2-0 with a 0.63 ERA in 2016.

Evan Fochtman, who is headed to Navy to play football, returns as an outstanding athlete after hitting .310 for 14 RBI and 17 runs scored. Also adding to the lineup is junior outfielder Peter Godrick, who hit .417 as a sophomore with a .563 on-base percentage.

“The team’s strengths this year will once again be the pitching rotation and the offensive lineup,” said coach Joe Palumbo, now in his fifth season. “We have three pitchers that are throwing in the mid to upper 80's that project to be our starting rotation.”
