Defending MIAA A champ McDonogh is back at No. 1 in VSN's boys' lacrosse poll; state champs Fallston and Severna Park resides in Top 10

After going wire-to-wire in the nation's toughest league, the MIAA A Conference, as well as No. 1 last spring, McDonogh School again has the No. 1 spot in the inaugural VSN Boys' Lacrosse Top 20 poll for 2017.

VSN ranks the top teams in the Baltimore region which covers public and private schools in Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Carroll County, Cecil County, Harford County and Howard County.

1. McDonogh School (Final 2016 record: 18-1; Final VSN Top 20 ranking: No. 1)

Player to watch: BJ Farrare, Jr., defender

On the X: The Eagles, off to a 2-0 start in 2017, will look to stellar defense and experience in attempt to become just second team in MIAA A era to go back-to-back in nation's premier league.

 

2. Boys' Latin School (14-4; No. 2)

Player to watch: Jake Glatz, Sr., midfielder/faceoff specialist

On the X: The Lakers (2-1 in 2017) have the experience and motivation to get back to MIAA A title match for fourth time in last five seasons.

 

3. Calvert Hall College (14-5; No. 5)

Player to watch: JT Bugliosi, Sr., attack

On the X: The Cardinals, off to a 2-0 start in 2017, have the pieces for a run at first MIAA A championship since 2012.

 

4. Severn School (16-7; No. 4)

Player to watch: Mike Lamon, Sr., attack

On the X: The Admirals (3-0 in 2017) are primed for MIAA A championship breakthrough this spring. 

 

5. St. Paul's School (12-7; No. 6)

Player to watch: Alex Rode, Sr, goalie

On the X: The Crusaders, off to 3-0 start in 2017, look to send retiring coach Rick Brocato off with another MIAA A championship.

 

6. Loyola Blakefield (9-7; No. 3)

Player to watch: Koby Smith, Sr., defender

On the X: The Dons (0-1 in 2017) will again be a tough out in MIAA A. 

 

7. Severna Park (17-2; No. 7)

Player to watch: Steven Zichelli, Sr., attack

On the X: The Falcons are the odds-on favorite to repeat as Class 4A/3A state champions.

 

8. Gilman School (3-13; not ranked)

Player to watch: Wade Oursler, Sr., midfielder

On the X: The Greyhounds seek to return to MIAA A postseason, led by Maryland recruit Oursler.

 

9. John Carroll School (20-6; No. 9)

Player to watch: Joey Rayman, Sr., attack

On the X: The Patriots are overwhelming favorite for three-peat in MIAA B Conference.

 

10. Fallston (15-5; No. 10)

Player to watch: Dylan Wolf, Sr., midfielder

On the X: The Cougars are stocked for another 2A/1A state title charge.

 

11. Howard (12-7; No. 12)

Player to watch: Mark Bruner, Sr., attack

On the X: The Lions will be the team to beat in Howard County and biggest challenger to Severna Park for 4A/3A state supremacy.

 

12. Hereford (17-2; No. 14)

Player to watch: JD Nozemack, Sr., attack

On the X: The Bulls seek return atop 3A/2A state mountain after a three-year hiatus. 

 

13. Liberty (19-1; No. 11)

Player to watch: Mark Conway, Sr., attack

On the X: The Lions will look for redemption after falling in 2A/1A state final last spring. 

 

14. Archbishop Spalding (5-11; not ranked)

Player to watch: Brett Baucia, Sr., attack 

On the X: The Cavaliers could be ready for a first MIAA A playoff bid behind UMBC recruits Baucia, Corey Gaines (defenseman) and midfielder Max Sherwood.

 

15. Westminster (10-6; No. 16)

Player to watch: Noah Park, Sr. midfielder

On the X: The Owls will challenge Liberty in Carroll County.

 

16. St. Mary's (1-15; not ranked)

Player to watch: Ian Kramp, So., attack

On the X: The Saints, already off to a 3-0 start, look for a bounce back after forgettable 2016 campaign.

 

17. Broadneck (15-2; No. 17)

Player to watch: Nick Tobin, Sr., attack

On the X: The Bruins will try to derail Severna Park in Anne Arundel County.

 

18. River Hill (13-4; No. 18)

Player to watch: Derek Issac, Sr., midfielder

On the X: The Hawks hope a new defensive unit matures as they look to challenge Howard in Howard County league.

 

19. Mount St. Joseph (12-9; not ranked)

Player to watch: Griffin Corbett, Jr., midfielder

On the X: The Gaels hope to continue making strides in nation's toughest league in MIAA A. 

 

20. C. Milton Wright (12-6; not ranked)

Player to watch: Kyle Stofko, Sr., defender

On the X: The Mustangs should be Fallston's biggest obstacle in UCBAC Chesapeake.
