Vermillion homers as Cavaliers break game open with a five-run sixth
Fourth-ranked Archbishop Spalding broke open a close game with five runs in the sixth inning and defeated visiting Loyola, 8-2, as both teams opened their respective MIAA A Conference baseball schedules, Monday in Severna Park.

Senior Nick Vermillion keyed the big fifth-inning surge with a two-run home run and Jordan Geber tossed six strong innings on the mound to earn the victory.

Geber allowed just two runs, both in the fifth inning on a 2-run home run by Loyola’s James Moses. Loyola’s only other hit was a triple by Miguel Mateo, two batters before Moses drove in both of them.

Peter Godrick was 2-for-3 for Spalding with a RBI and two runs scored and Justin Caesar went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. Evan Fochtman, Kris Burkowski and Nick Benitez also drove in single runs for the Cavaliers (3-1 overall).
