Former Calvert Hall star also matches ground ball mark
Stephen “Bones” Kelly, an All-American during his time at Calvert Hall, tied a University of North Carolina school record for face-off wins, Sunday, in helping the 20th-ranked Tar Heels knock off No. 14 Virginia, 15-12, in ACC men’s lacrosse.

Kelly won 13 draws agains the Cavaliers, tying the school record set by Shane Walterhoefer in 2008 against Ohio State. Kelly also matched the school record for ground balls with 15. He is the seventh Tar Heel to match the mark with the last person to do it also being Walterhoefer, in 2009 against Providence.

Kelly, only a junior, now has 658 career face-off wins, which ranks second UNC history. He passed former Boys’ Latin star R.G. Keenan on this list during Sunday’s game. Again, Kelly is chasing Walterhoefer for the top spot. His record stands at 723.

The victory was also significant in that it was the 100th at North Carolina for Tar Heels head coach Joe Breschi. He is 100-45 in nine seasons with Carolina, including a win last year’s national championship game.
