Sailors hand No. 5 Patriots first softball loss behnd Tolle and Davidson
Olivia Davidson drove in two runs and Lindsay Tolle allowed four hits as No. 16 Mount de Sales Academy defeated the fifth-ranked Patriots, 3-2, in an IAAM A Conference softball contest at Catonsville Middle School Wednesday afternoon.
Davidson highlighted a three-run fifth inning rally for the Sailors (3-4 overall, 2-2 IAAM A), doubling home Taylor Forgen and Julie Rowe. Abby Fontana's singled home Davidson for a 3-1 advantage.
The Patriots (6-1, 4-1 IAAM A) got to within 3-2 in the sixth as Meg Sheehan, who singled with one out, scored after a couple of Mount de Sales errors. John Carroll had the tying run at second with one out, but Tolle got the final two outs.
Tolle was in trouble again in the seventh as Jules Donnelly reached on an error to start the frame. Donnelly got to second with one out but was caught attempting to swipe third.
The Patriots got the tying run to third before Tolle struck out Alyssa Ryerson to end it. Tolle struck out four.
Davidson and Julia Rowe each finished 2-for-3 for Mount de Sales. Sheehan had three hits for John Carroll, which scored 67 runs in their previous four decisions.
The Patriots host undefeated and third-ranked Dulaney in a non-league match Thursday afternoon in Bel Air. Mount de Sales plays Saturday at the Cavalier Classic in Severn against Prince George's County's Elizabeth Seton and 13th-ranked Northeast.
