Patriots defeat McDonogh, 4-2, to strengthen playoff position
Playing at home Monday afternoon, John Carroll broke a 2-2 tie with single runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings and the Patriots made that stand up for a MIAA A Conference baseball victory over visiting McDonogh.

The go-ahead run was manufactured by Zach Rasmussen, who drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on consecutive fielder’s choice grounders. The fourth inning run was scored by Nico Santoro who singled to left, stole second and went to third on an error, before being plated by a RJ Price sac fly.

John Carroll initially went up 2-0 in the second inning on an RBI ground out by Ryan Waugh and an RBI single by Mike McCabe.

McDonogh got the game even in the fourth when Evan Hertzberg singled and later came home to score on an infield error, before Jack Kinney drove in the second Eagle run with a sac fly.

Alex Marlow went the distance for the Patriots, throwing 98 pitches, allowing just five hits and striking out eight. Both runs Marlow allowed were unearned.

The win was key for the Patriots (7-5, 6-4 MIAA A) because it gives them a three game lead over the Eagles (4-10, 3-7 MIAA A) and Archbishop Curley in the race for the sixth and final spot of the MIAA A Conference playoffs. The second half of the season has just gotten underway, but the Pats do now have a nice working margin.
