Post performer helped Dunbar girls' to state championship
Oma-ah Tayong, who emerged as one of the better post players in the area last season, has signed with LaSalle University. Poets coach Wardell Selby said Tayong, 6-foot-3, is currently taking summer courses at the northwest Philadelphia school.
Tayong selected LaSalle over Alabama-Birmingham, Coppin State and Morgan State. She was the Poets' second-leading scorer behind junior Michelle Wright, forming a potent 1-2 punch.
At the state Final Four at UMBC, Tayong posted a double-double (15 points and 15 rebounds) as the Poets ended Joppatowne's reign as Class 1A champions in the semifinals. She followed with 15 points and 19 rebounds as the east Baltimore school claimed the state title over Garrett County's Southern.
Tayong was the MVP for Baltimore City at the annual City/County senior all-star game at Lake Clifton.
"Oma was a 6-3 kid with no heart, no desire," said Selby. "She got motivated, started working out on her own and improved."
