On Super Bowl weekend, the biggest game on the calendar for Mercy and Institute of Notre Dame basketball teams take place Friday evening with the 47th annual “The Game” at Towson Center.
The Magic holds a 29-17 advantage in the series that started in 1967 at then-Baltimore Civic Center (now Baltimore Arena). The Penguins won 33-32 last season, ending a five-game losing streak.
If the Magic bounce back Friday, it’ll bode for the Ravens, who are set to play San Francisco in Super Bowl XLVII Sunday night in New Orleans. Mercy won “The Game” in 2001 preceding the Ravens’ victory over the New York Giants in Super Bowl XXXV.
In 1983, Mercy won as the Orioles won the World Series in the fall. The Northern Parkway also won in 1971 (Colts won Super Bowl V) and 1970 (Orioles won World Series).
