|Geben helps Goretti upend No. 6 Spalding|
In an exciting game that was hard fought and close throughout, St. Maria Goretti, behind a tremendous performance from junior star Martin Geben, was able to knock off visiting and No. 6 Archbishop Spalding, 58-56, in a Baltimore Catholic League match in Hagerstown Sunday.
Goretti raced out to a 10-0 lead in the first 4 minutes and 30 seconds of the contest, but Spalding battled back to within two at the half. The Cavaliers, who had their game with St. Frances Academy suspended at the half on Friday night, finally went in front in the fourth quarter and led by four with two minutes to play in the game.
As time wound down, the host Gaels pulled even and then took the lead on a layup by Geben with less than a minute of play. Geben followed with two big blocks on the defensive end that was able to seal the win for Goretti.
Geben ended the game with 12 points, 16 rebounds and seven blocks. This followed a monster 28-point, 20-rebound effort in Goretti's 69-56 victory over Mount Carmel Friday evening.
Goretti (18-9, 7-6 BCL) was lead in scoring on Sunday by Ameka Akaya’s 14 points and Brady Shaper chipped in with 12 points on four three-pointers. Point guard Ryan Grant was excellent at handling Spalding’s pressure and finished with eight assists on the day.
Archbishop Spalding (18-8, 7-4) received 17 points from Jourdan Grant, and Kai Dalce finished with 14 points.
