Dual threat quarterback helped Atholton to region football finals
Atholton High quarterback Luke Casey has accepted a football scholarship to Rhode Island University, his father, Dennis, said.
Casey accounted for more than 2,500 yards and 26 touchdowns last fall, helping the Raiders (10-2; No.9 in final VSN Top 20 poll) back to the Class 3A East Region playoffs. The Columbia school lost to eventual state champ River Hill in the region finals.
A transfer from Mount St. Joseph, Casey, 6-foot-4 and 190 pounds, slid into the starting role vacated by Brian McMahon, who was a preferred walk-on at the University of Maryland last season. Casey was selected to the Howard County coaches’ all-league team and was an honorable mention selection on the Big School All-State squad.
Casey is familiar with the Rhode Island campus, located in Kingston. Sister Caroline is currently a sophomore and member of the volleyball team after starring at Mount de Sales Academy.
Hunter Eubanks, a former teammate at Mount St. Joseph, is a sophomore defensive linemen for the FCS school which competes in the Colonial Athletic Association.
